HR Academy Course #4: Becoming Fluent in Finance and Accounting

In the past, HR has often had limited opportunities for representation on executive management teams. Happily, many experts predict that change is on the horizon and in the near future senior HR professionals like yourself will begin to take their place at the executive table. Of course, taking the seat is the first step. Keeping the seat will require you to consistently add value to the executive team and the company. You can start by becoming fluent in finance. It has often been said that finance is the language of business. Ultimately, your ability to analyze and interpret financial statements, understand their interrelationship and integrate that understanding with your offering of HR expertise and leadership will be integral to your ability to be a successful executive.

This course will describe the key actions you need to take to become fluent in finance, gain an understanding of financial statements, deploy financial analysis techniques in your HR analysis activities, ask the right questions of finance teammates and communicate your ideas and conclusions to the other members of the executive team. Wade Lindenberger has over 25 years of executive, finance and human resources experience in public, private and Fortune 500 companies. He is currently owner of Lindenberger Consulting. As an educator, he has created several online courses and currently serves as a full-time lecturer at the Rady School of Management, University of California, San Diego. Wade is the author of several articles addressing important human resource topics and the complex partnership between finance and human resources. He has also been a speaker at several conferences and business meetings on human resource, finance and other business topics, including HR Academy!
Wade is a member of the American Institute of Professional Bookkeeper Advisory Board, the AICPA and the California Society of CPAs. In his spare time, he has co-authored multiple books and is an avid
guitarist and singer. A San Diego native, Wade lives
in Carmel Valley with his wife Kayoko and their Pembroke Welsh Corgi Sugar.
